Los Angeles Hotel Union Protest Tomorrow

UNITE HERE hotel union officials announced that they are scheduling a protest for tomorrow afternoon (September 28) at 4:30 pm during rush hour traffic with the intent to close down Century Boulevard–one of the main corridors to and from LAX.

Union activists are trying to fuse their organizing efforts with the country’s immigration debate as they focus on the Hilton LAX, which they claim pays unfair wages for a work force with many immigrants. The union has been trying to organize the Hilton LAX’s 500 employees. Hotel management has said it would welcome a union election and calls the protest tactics unfair to the people who use LAX.

In a number of recent commentaries on the national union negotiations, my partner, Marta Fernandez, has given us some excellent perspectives on the significance of the issues at stake. In talking to her today about the anticipated disruption at LAX tomorrow, Marta said, “As the LA hotels resist the organizing efforts and the union heads into negotiations with the LA Hotel Employers Council, we can expect a marked increase in union disruption to publicize and politicize the union positions. If you have a hotel in any cities where the hotel unions are active, you should ensure that your property access, solicitation and distribution policies are current and in compliance.” More on that soon.
